Egypt (Girls saved from FGM) PDF Print E-mail

                     

Reda Farouk is 13 years old.  She lives in Beni Khalil village in Beni Soef District. She was trained by IAC National Committee (COST/CGC) in Egypt for the child-to-child program and is a team leader.  Reda and her team visit nearby villages campaigning against FGM and early marriage among their peers. 

Community members testify to her vigor and dedication to duty.  In 2005 for her incentive, COST/CGC gave her a goat.  To date the goat is still alive and yielding milk for Reda and her family.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another girl, Hana Yousef 14 also got a goat as a reward for being a role model.  The goat has multiplied.

Reda and  Hana are not excised and Hana has promised not to get married before 20.

                       

 
Liberia (midwife) PDF Print E-mail

Mrs. Elizabeth Kpana Corneh popularly called Ma Kpana, is 65 year old. She trained as a traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) and works at the Clinic of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.  She lives in Jacob’s town on the outskirts of Monrovia, a former FGM stronghold.

Following intensive campaign by IAC Liberia (NATPAH) in 2000, Ma Kpana gave up FGM, enrolled for the Adult Literacy Program to be trained in traditional midwifery. As a change agent, Ma Kpana continues to mobilize the community against FGM.

Preamble
IAC-Nigeria since inception in Nigeria had pursued programmes aimed at eliminating FGM in the country.IAC-Nigeria had focused on training of traditional birth attendants who are the custodians of culture and tradition as well as perpetrators of FGM.At all trainings, trainees pledge to uphold the objectives of IAC and to work to eliminate FGM in their communities

Sudan (A father & husband) PDF Print E-mail

Sudan IAC National Committee (SNCTP) has a prison project whereby prisoners and prison staffs of Sinar town in Sinar State, Sudan are trained on FGM elimination.  The Director of Prisons Mr. Sefian Hussein El Nueri is a board member of SNCTP Sinar State.  He has been the Chairperson of the construction committee of the Chapter office building since 2008. 

 Mr. El Nueri a husband and a father of 2 girls said he used to talk to fellow men to discourage FGM in their families. 

“I forbid FGM in my own family”, he affirmed to IAC.

 

 

 
Tanzania (Former Exciser) PDF Print E-mail

A former exciser, Fatuma Rajab, about 76 years old, said that she stopped FGM in 2003 when she heard during a sensitization outreach by IAC National Committee in Singida Tanzania (SIAC) that FGM is bad.
She said: “I used to circumcise 15 to 20 girls per day during circumcision period. It was a source of income.”
Madam Fatuma disclosed that excision of one girl costs a goat or its equivalent in material things.
She condemned FGM outright and pledged never to go back to the practice no matter how hard things would be. She is a widow and her only child a daughter is dead. Today, she lives alone.

When asked what could be done to support her to get some alternative income, she proposed being given some seed fund to make buns and chapatti for sale.

signed by 5 UN agencies and 6 professional organizations, was in close collaboration with NGOs.

This document aims to eliminate the performance of Female Genital Mutilation by health-care providers.

Executive Director of IAC Bags an Austrian parliament award for her fight against Female Genital Mutilation

On the 26th of April,  the Executive Director of the IAC-Inter-African Committee, Mrs Berhane Ras-Work, an icon of the fight against FGM, was presented with Austria 's highest Order of Merit by Barbara Prammer, President of the Austrian Parliament, at a grand ceremony in Vienna . This award is in recognition of her over 25 years struggle to bring an end to the gruesome practice of FGM.  Read more...
